Color is current speed. Moving streaks show direction. Each animation frame covers about 17 hours of flow, so streaks show where water goes, with relative speeds kept.
Mean vs single day. The monthly mean smooths eddies and shows the broad pattern. A single day (the middle of each month) shows eddies and meanders that a drifting object would actually meet.
Seasonal shift. The window covers the 2014 south-west monsoon, the 2014–15 north-east monsoon and the start of the 2015 south-west monsoon. Press play and watch the equatorial jets, the Somali Current and the Bay of Bengal flow reverse and return.
GLORYS12V1 (Mercator Ocean) via Copernicus Marine: daily surface currents at 0.49 m depth from your MH370-External-Data archive, averaged to 1/3° from the original 1/12°. March 2014 starts on 8 March, the date of the MH370 event, and July 2015 ends on 29 July. In Water only mode the map shows currents alone, with no wind drift and no Stokes drift.
Floating object mode adds wind drift to the current: slip is the share of the 10 m wind speed the object moves at, and the angle turns that drift to the right (+) or left (−) of the wind. The wind is NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis 1 daily 10 m wind (about 1.9° grid), averaged the same way as the currents. The C0 to C3 classes use the midpoint of the slip range I assumed for each class in the debris model. They are assumptions, not measurements. The model's lowest total slip is 1.2%, a stand-in for Stokes drift that is already inside total slip and never added on top. No explicit wave drift is shown. This is a snapshot of drift velocity, not a debris path.
Current names and boxes are my placement. The speeds and directions in the table come from the data, not from the labels.
